do you really think national service is the answer?
as an ex soldier, i am against it 100%. the british army, widely acknowledged as the most professional army in the world, until the pc brigade come along, dont want the countries rubbish. we are the best because we are volunteers, so when we are asked to jump, we dont ask why, we ask how high, thats why men went over the top to their deaths, discipline, and blind obedience, i do agree with penal battalions for criminals though, that might make good men out of bad. i did 2 months in military prison, and i wouldnt go back for another day. so leave people who dont wanna be soldiers, but thugs, thieves, etc, penal battalions, run on army rules, by military police. it would also deter people from turning to crime when the ones who come out tell them, you dont wanna go in there mate. and also ease our prison populations. i know you say thay can just refuse, in that case, as in colchester nick, your entitled to blanket,water, and three meals, nothing else. agree or not??
how about a national service for thugs, we treat em like they do in the army with all the shouting and training and punishments but they don’t go to war they help out in areas where disaster relief is required ? how does that sound?

You are right. As Xenophon said, and I still believe and hope to be true, “Voluntary disciple will always beat forced obedience” Which is to say, an army of free men will always beat an army of serfs. I refer you to our past wars against Russia and China.
I too am an ex soldier, and I don’t think National Service would work today. The kids these days are not brought up with the mindset that other generations were imbued with. However, that is not to denigrate the conscripts who died in their thousands for this country. And it was mainly conscripts that went over the top. Also, after WW2 hundreds of National Servicemen were killed and injured in post- colonial conflicts like Cyprus . Malaya, Kenya etc. Also in Korea .
PS. I spent a year in the MCTC(Colchester) one week !
Sorry but us civvies are clutching at straws! We’re looking for ways to re-introduce some respect.
Parents can’t or won’t punish.
Schools can’t punish.
Police can’t punish.
The justice system has it’s head up it’s as*.
It seems to us that the services is one branch of society where you’re made to toe the line?
Something has to change PBQ or it’ll be vigilantees and anarchy!
For what it’s worth i agree with you..men and women absolutely can not be forced to be soldiers..it’s a chosen profession, it must remain a voluntary service. You suggest penal battalions for criminals..sounds good to me..

I would just like to say i admire the honourable men and women who make the commitment to guard our country and others with their lives..and as you say when asked to jump they say how high…
