This is what the TSA has to say about knives. I carry my pocket knife that I've had since I was 7 with me in my toiletry bag (in my checked luggage of course) and I've never had a problem. As long as you check it there won't be a problem. Have fun on your field trip. I was in Air Force JROTC and my husband was in Marine Corps JROTC. I met him at a drill competition.
