this storm has me whacked up?

army blanket
The Broken Doll asked:

This thunderstorm has me messed up, I’m alternating between crying, whimpering, and screaming. I’m UNDER my bed with the laptop, wrapped in three different blankets, have an army of stuffed animals, have music blaring to try to drown the storm out, and am shaking. My heart is racing, my palms are sweaty, and my tummy is growling. I’m so scared, what should I do. I feel like a baby, I’m 15 and my mom says that I need to tough it out, that it’s time to get over this petty fear. What should I do?
I can’t sleep
I don’t know what it is, I like rain, just not the thunder. Any loud noises scare me enough to scream.
The more I focus on how low the chances are the more I think about how unlucky I am, and that it’s probably going to be me swept away by the tornado, or me hit by lightning.
I’m shaking so hard it’s a wonder I can type, much less stop whimpering or get out from under the bed. I just don’t know what to do, I know my mom is going to rush up if I scream, and I feel like this is such a trivial thing to get scared of, I know nothings going to hurt me, but it doesn’t matter, I’m scared no matter how many times I tell myelf that.

My laptop is unplugged.

You have got to get out from under the bed and force yourself to walk out into the rain. The only way to deal with a fear of phobia is to face it head on.

  • farien3 says:

You seem to have some kind of anxiety problem. I would suggest some therapy.

  • Wes's Granny says:

Do you realize how many millions and millions of people have survived the thunder storm? Get out of there. It’s just a little rain and noise. If you don’t want to be struck by lightening, don’t go outside. If you don’t want to get wet, don’t go outside. Problem solved. Don’t like the noise? Get some earphones and music on your head.

  • Charles Wellingston says:

Ask yourself, what exactly is it that scares you? The idea of a storm? or something in the storm itself. What is there to be afraid of.

  • Angel A says:

    Lay flat on your back.

    Close your eyes

Concentrate on being at the beach.

Listen to the sound of the waves.

Feel the warmth on your skin.

    Smell the suntan lotion.

    Hear the radio playing.

Feel the breeze touch your skin.

Relax. :) If you concentrate hard enough.. you’ll either relax and block most of it out or put yourself to sleep. :)

listen to soothing music and try not to think about it. you’ll be fine. weather is made naturally, it wont kill you. Is it tornadoes your scared of? Cause i have that huge fear too, i try not to let ruin my life but i can get out of hand too. In the end you’ll think “wow, i over reacted”. dont worry and just get some sleep.

  • FederalD says:

  • Danny says:

its ok to be afried. i am to. i hope your army of animals keeps you safe. ….i hope mine keeps me safe to.

  • cog1233 says:

Maybe if you study up on the subject of storms and how to be safe during them then it will help you to understand how to cope with them.I personally love storms, exspecially thunder and lightning.By the way where do you live,I don’t mean exactly, just wondering if you in Michigan, cause we have been getting all kinds of wicked stuff from tornados, hail, lightning.

  • shppingk6 says:

Well, I know it seems hard. But breath its ok.

Try keeping your self Busy or talking to people or distract you during the storm. Just think it could be alot different(in a bad way). But yeah, Mabye put on the T.V./
That sould help you out if it dosent .. Call a friend

  • Guzz H says:

We’re having thunderstorms here too, and tornado warnings. It *****. Feels like I’m trapped in one of those bad disaster movies.

But let’s think about this logically. The last time it stormed, did you actually get hurt? Or did you just get scared? How old is the place where you are living? My home is two decades old, and it has survived tons of thunderstorms. I think that means there is a high chance that it will survive this one too. You have your mom there, and you will be ok.

  • hannahs3092000 says:

I have a daughter that is the same way, be rest asured that if there is a problem your parents will get you to safty. I sent my girls to bed, because for the most part the storms are just passing right over us, except for the rain, and thunder.

When my kids were little I used to tell them that the thunder was God up there bowling, and when it really got loud that mean that he got a strike. It always made them feel better, I know your not that little, but you really have nothing to worry about. Get some sleep and it will be over by morning. good nite

Buck up soldier… The odds of getting hit inside a house by lightening are…. I am sure you have heard this.

If it helps, try this on yourself. All worrying about an improbable negative future event does is waste energy and make you feel lousy. And no matter how hard you worry, it wont change the likelihood that the negative event eventually will happen.

So why not just live life normally, until the bad event passes or happens.

I know it is easily to be rational, but your fear is irrational yet real for you…. but it works for some people including me.

    Good Luck

  • Carole Q says:

You need to concentrate on WHY it scares you.
Apparently, it is the noise not the lightning, wind or rain.
It is just noise. Plus, understanding what creates a storm makes fear easier to control.

You KNOW the noise will not hurt you or the house. It is nature’s Fourth of July’s firecrackers. Associate the noise with fireworks.

    1) understand what creates storms & how they work – - knowledge eliminates intimidation of fear.
    2) realizing it is just noise.
    3) realizing that it is a fact, thunder does not hurt anything.
    4) associate it with similar & less frightening noises and do this everytime using less frightening comparisons.

first of all, get off the computer – you can get a nasty shock from electronics in an electrical storm (to say nothing of frying your laptop). secondly, try to control your breathing. hold your breath for a few seconds, and, then, try to take slow rhythmic deep breaths. focus on your breathing – it will help distract you from the storm. third, don’t beat yourself up over it; many people even older than yourself are afraid of thunderstorms. they’re scary! it’s natural to be afraid. recognise, however, that you’re most likely safe in your house (after you get off the computer). try stretching, a bit, if you can. it won’t last forever. feel better.

  • anthonydude91 says:

You should just tough it out. I was scarred of thunder storms when I was 5. 11 years later I enjoy it. You just have to learn its thunder and no one is going to come out of your closet with a knife. One thing that works is just scream it all out with your pillow covering your mouth so you wont scare people with your scream. Sooner or later you will not be afraid and you will go like I hope the power won’t turn off. If you can’t tough it out use ear plugs.

  • caminolargo76 says:

My sister was very much like yourself when it came to thunder storms she as deafly afraid of the thunder not so much the lightning though, she actually loved the lightning. Well being her older brother I had to figure a way to pinch this fear she had of thunder…we would stay at the window awaiting a bolt of lightning, we’d then proceed to count how long it took until the thunder crashed this also determines how far or close the storm is….so we’d make it a game and count the seconds, after a bit she learned to “control” the thunder as she counted…it became something for her to do to take her mind off the sound, it distracted her enough to subside the fear. Give it a shot when you learn to “control” the thunder you can master it. Good luck!
